A solemn anniversary marks the end of a football career and the beginning of a new chapter for former NFL offensive lineman Charles Leno Jr. On October 14, 2025, exactly two years after his wife, Jen, suffered a miscarriage, Leno announced his retirement from the sport. A decision that, according to Leno, was deeply personal and tied to that tragic day.
The timing of his announcement, at 2:46 p.m., held profound significance. It was the exact moment when, in 2023, Leno received the devastating news while preparing for a game with the Washington Commanders against the Atlanta Falcons. He chose not to play that day, and it was then that he knew his football journey had come to an end.
"That day changed everything," Leno reflected in an Instagram post. "It altered my perspective on life, how I present myself, and most importantly, it redefined my priorities."
Leno's career spanned seven years with the Chicago Bears, where he started 141 games at left tackle, and his final three seasons with the Commanders. However, it was the loss of their fourth daughter, Paitynn, who was due that spring, that truly impacted his decision to retire.
In a heartfelt three-page letter, Leno expressed his gratitude to fans, teammates, coaches, family, and friends, and he paid a special tribute to his 'rock,' his wife, Jen. He also mentioned his daughters, Carsynn, Oaklynn, and Jordynn, and emphasized that being their father was the greatest role of his life.
"To our Angel, Paitynn, this moment is dedicated to you," Leno wrote. "Daddy's love for you is eternal. I carry you in my heart every day."

The Commanders' release of Leno in the 2024 offseason, shortly after new management took over, could have played a role.
