Extinct Freshwater Crocodile Resurfaces in Bangladesh's Padma River! (2025)

Imagine this: A creature, once declared gone forever, suddenly reappears, defying the odds and rewriting the narrative of its existence. That's precisely what happened in Bangladesh's Padma River! A freshwater crocodile, officially labeled extinct by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) back in the year 2000, has been spotted, sending ripples of excitement through the wildlife community.

Wildlife enthusiasts Imrul Kayes and Umme Khadija Eva, a photographer and rescue worker duo, were the lucky ones to witness this incredible event. On Thursday, October 16th, while capturing the beauty of birds in the Char Majhardia area, they received a tip from the Wildlife Conservation Department about a possible crocodile sighting.

Initially, their search led them to a dead end. A local shepherd claimed to have seen the reptile in a small creek, but the elusive creature remained hidden. Undeterred, Imrul took to the skies with a drone to survey the area. And this is where the story gets really interesting... Peering through the Kans grass, he spotted a triangular object in the water. As they drew closer, the truth became undeniable: it was a crocodile! His wife captured the moment with her camera while he documented it with video and drone footage.

The crocodile was found approximately 450 meters within Bangladesh's territory, near a triangular section of the Padma that extends into India, where the water is deeper. Imrul believes the crocodile's habitat might be in that area, and it could have crossed over from the Indian side. "Wildlife has no boundaries," he explained, drawing a parallel with wild pigs that are found across the border.

Jahangir Kabir, an inspector at the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department, confirmed the freshwater crocodile's extinct status since 2000. However, he noted that there have been reports of juvenile freshwater crocodiles in recent years in the Rajshahi area. The one seen on Thursday was an adult, which could mean it migrated from India, or the species is making a comeback!

ABM Sarwar Alam, the chief researcher of IUCN Bangladesh, added that since the extinction declaration, there have been a few other sightings. These crocodiles were later relocated to the Karamjal Wildlife Centre in the Sundarbans. He also noted that the recently sighted crocodile didn't originate in Bangladesh's natural environment and may have come from India's Chambal River. Bangladesh is home to three crocodile species: the saltwater crocodile, the extinct freshwater crocodile, and the gharial.

But here's where it gets controversial... The reappearance of this crocodile raises questions. Is it a sign of hope for the species, or is it a one-off event? And what does this sighting mean for conservation efforts in the region? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
